What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen. Tummy tucks are ideal for individuals with excess skin after childbirth or significant weight loss.

Dr. Blumenauer tightens the underlying muscles during the procedure for a firmer, tighter appearance. Additionally, he often performs liposuction in tandem with the tummy tuck to perfect your results. Dr. Blumenauer collaborates with each patient to ensure abdominoplasty is the right procedure to help achieve their cosmetic goals.

Who is a candidate for a tummy tuck?

Tummy tuck surgery is ideal for individuals with excess abdominal fat and skin that haven’t responded to diet and exercise. Dr. Blumenauer may recommend a tummy tuck under the following circumstances:

  • You have loose, sagging abdominal skin.
  • You have excess fat around the abdomen and waist.
  • You have lost a significant amount of weight.
  • You have given birth.
  • You have realistic expectations about your results.
  • You are in good health.
  • You are a nonsmoker.
  • You are not planning to become pregnant again.
  • You do not want to lose more weight.

Abdominoplasty is not a weight loss treatment. You should maintain a healthy weight if you’re interested in tummy tuck surgery.

How do I prepare for a tummy tuck?

To prepare for tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Blumenauer may recommend that you take the following actions:

  • Adjust your current medications.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Avoid taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers.
  • Stop taking certain supplements.

Before your procedure, Dr. Blumenauer will also discuss the techniques he may use to perform your surgery.

What happens during a tummy tuck?

After anesthesia is administered, Dr. Blumenauer will make a horizontal incision along the pubic hairline. If you have excess skin in the upper abdomen, he may create a vertical incision to reposition the skin and underlying tissue. Dr. Blumenauer can combine your procedure with liposuction to remove unwanted fat from the abdomen.

Dr. Blumenauer will also tighten the underlying abdominal muscles for a firmer, more sculpted appearance. Finally, he will make a new hole for your belly button and suture your incisions.

Dr. Blumenauer will apply bandages and wrap your abdomen in compression garments to protect your incisions and minimize swelling. This step ensures your abdomen has support and structure during your recovery.
